Four Museums to Visit for National Aviation History Month

November is National Aviation History Month. With numerous military bases and the NASA Langley Research Center nearby, Hampton Roads is rich in aviation history. Plan a day trip and visit some of the aviation museums in our communities and learn a little bit about aviation, the skies above, and the interesting history of air and space exploration.

Military Aviation Museum

The Military Aviation Museum is home to one of the largest private collections of World War I and World War II era military aircraft in the world. Each plane has been restored, and most are airworthy and flown at air shows and flight demonstrations throughout the year.

Virginia Air and Space Center

The visitor center for NASA Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base, this world-class facility features the Adventures in Flight and Space Quest galleries and more than 100 "hands-on" exhibits that tell the story of air and space exploration. Visit the technologically advanced 3D IMAX® Theater and see a film on a five-story screen with 16,000 watts of digital-sound.

Air Power Park

413 West Mercury Boulevard

Hampton, VA 23666

This free, 15-acre park features several vintage aircraft and experimental space launch vehicles from the 1950s and 1960s, including jets, missiles and rockets. Many of the displays have connections with nearby Langley Air Force Base and NASA Langley Research Center.

The indoor museum at the center of the park includes themed rooms with more than 325 models of aircraft, spacecraft and nautical vessels representing all the U.S. branches of service and some other nations.
